Gunfight at the Courtyard Marriott Austin Airport Hotel

This weekend, Diplomacy gunslingers from all over the country will descend on Austin, Texas, to shoot it out for the first ever North American Diplomacy Federation Championship. I'm excited to be joining them.

Billed as the NADF Masters, the tournament was conceived and organized by 1998 world champion Chris Martin of the Potomac Tea & Knife Society in response to feedback that the hobby needed a way to crown its champion that was more selective than the open DipCon format and more accessible than the Grand Prix. His solution was an invitational for which players could qualify by finishing on a top board at any Grand Prix-qualifying event in the previous two years.

More than 60 players received invitations to the inaugural Master. Around 20 are expected to attend, including at least one European, two-time world champion Cyrille Sevin.

By Sunday evening, after three rounds of what should be intense Diplomacy, the hobby will have its first NADF champion. ... To go along with its North American Champion, DipCon winner Eric Mead, and its Grand Prix Champion, Peter Yeargin. This new title will augment rather than replace the other two. Each title is meaningful and prestigious in its own way.

The DipCon Champion wins a large, open tournament where the level of play can run the gamut. The Grand Prix Champion posts the best collection of results over the course of a season. And the new NADF Champion or Master wins an invitational where the play should be of a high caliber.

Carnage goes to Conrad; Yeargin wins the Grand Prix!

The 2010 NADF Grand Prix concluded Nov. 5-7 at the Carnage Accords in Fairlee, Vt. Conrad Woodring, currently of Beaumont, Texas, won the seven-board tournament, but it was Peter Yeargin who won the big prize, officially claiming the Grand Prix championship that he wrapped up at October's Tempest in a Teapot in Silver Spring, Maryland.

A former Windy City Weasel of the Year, Yeargin grabbed the lead from Steve Cooley, currently of New England, by winning HuskyCon in July. He never relinquished it, easily fending off a late rush by the Potomac Tea & Knife Society's Andy "Buffalo" Bartalone. In addition to Husky, Yeargin won Chicago's Weasel Moot in September. Rounding out his best four scores were a second-place finish at Chapel Hill's DixieCon in May and a third-place finish at Chicago's CODCon Open in April. He walloped the field with a total score of 440.8.

Buffalo wins Tempest, Yeargin the presumptive Grand Prix Champ

Andy "Buffalo" Bartalone wonTempest in a Teapot for the second year in a row to move into second place in the Grand Prix. He and leader Peter Yeargin both will be playing at Carnage next month, the circuit's final event. However, Yeargin carries a virtually insurmountable 158-point lead.

Buffalo, like Yeargin, has already scored four events. His lowest score is 16.21, at Weasel Moot last month. In order to catch Yeargin, he'd have to score 180 points at Carnage while Yeargin scored less than 71. (Yeargin's low score is 64.8, at the CODCon Open.) Carnage has never fielded more than nine boards, so it looks like this year's event will be a victory lap for Yeargin.

Yeargin will be the Windy City Weasels' second Grand Prix champion. The first, Jim O'Kelley in 2006, also took his victory lap at Carnage.

Nick Rohn tops Buckeye Game Fest!

Buckeye Game Fest is the annual club convention run by the Columbus Area Boardgaming Society (http://buckeyeboardgamers.org/). While not as large as Origins or GenCon, we manage to bring in a diverse cross-section of gamers from Ohio and neighboring states. Befitting our football crazy town, we hold Buckeyeevery year during an OSU away game, and absolutely require TVs at the venue so we can watch the game. This year, the convention was held at the Fort Rapids indoor water park and resort.

Buckeye is an open gaming model with a huge library of games available to all players. Many companies were also on hand to demo games. The Diplomacy teaching event and Diplomacy tournament were two of the few “official” events scheduled.

Peter Yeargin wins Weasel Moot

Peter Yeargin won the 12-board Weasel Moot, played last weekend in the Chicago suburb of Burr Ridge, to tighten his grip on the 2010 Grand Prix crown. He now leads Steve Cooley, his closest pursuer, by 182.2 points.

The Moot was Yeargin's second win of the year. He also won the 17-board HuskyCon in July. In addition, he placed second at the 10-board DixieCon in May and third at Chicago's eight-board CODCon Open in April.

Grand Prix hopefuls have three final chances to run him down, starting with this weekend's Buckeye Game Fest in Columbus, Ohio. Then it's on to Silver Spring, Maryland, for Tempest in a Teapot, Oct. 15 to 17. The Grand Prix will conclude at Carnage, Nov. 5 to 7 in Fairlee, Vermont.

Yeargin plans to play at Tempest and Carnage, which will make him even more difficult to catch. He currently sits atop the field with 444.8 points. Cooley is second, at 262.6; Dave Maletsky is third at 201.7; Andy Bartalone is fourth at 201; and defending champion Adam Sigal rounds out the top five with 199.6 points.

The standings have been updated on the NADF's website as well.

2010 Grand Prix Schedule and Results

It was pointed out to me that we no longer had a full 2010 Grand Prix Schedule and Results page.  I've added a page under the Grand Prix menu for this very thing that includes the complete list of event names, locations, organizers and any results we have received along the way.

If you are the tournament director or have written up any post tournament results that you would like included along with your event, please let me know via e-mail at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and I will get those added to the page quickly.  I will also add a link to Laurent's database as he has recently updated his website with the most recent results also.

Welcome to the new NADF Homepage

Welcome to the new NADF website! Although it has been slow to come, the framework and some of the basics are finally here. We are going to add more and more as time goes on. We currently have a few people working on different things but are always looking for more! We really need more professional quality development help, so feel free to step up to the plate and offer your help.

Our NADF News feed is still being created. When it is in place, we hope that it will offer timely up-to-date information about what's going on in the face-to-face hobby.
